Where did this “van life” idea begin? I’m not exactly sure. I do remember a few years ago while working a very small and occasional “side hustle” a concern entered my thoughts. I was seeing an elderly woman who lived out in the country. She had a modest home. Well kept and comfortable. I don’t remember what she and family did for a living but by the appearance of the home, they managed.
Then she said something to me that stunned me. She was living on Social Security and was paying on her mortgage! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. This woman in her 80’s had a mortgage payment. I do not know how much it was, that really did not matter to me. The fact that she had one worried me.
I was in my 50’s at the time. I had a mortgage, and I was not seeing daylight at the end. I knew I had years to pay on mine and that concerned me. Not enough to make me change my course of action. But I think this was the starting point of the process.
